Won the ‘Award of Best Reviewed Thesis’ from the Pharmaceutical Society of Korea
Research special professor Choi Jae-soo
Choi Jae-soo, a 65-year-old research special professor at Pukyong National University, received the ’Best Reviewed Thesis Award’ from the Pharmaceutical Society of Korea (PSK). On the 21, October, the Pharmaceutical Society of Korea (President Lee Yong-bok) selected 22 people in 14 categories for the academic award of the Pharmaceutical Society of Korea, 2020. Professor Choi’s award-winning attracts attention in that most of the 22 winners are professors of pharmaceutical universities or researchers from pharmaceutical companies. ’Reviewed thesis’ refers to a paper that has been newly interpreted after reading domestic and foreign papers on a specific subject. In other words, the long-standing research know-how in the field must be supported. Professor Choi has published 7 reviewed thesis so far. Among them, he was awarded this time in recognition of the excellence of the reviewed paper entitled ’Epigenetic modifications of gene expression by lifestyle and environment’ published in <Archives Pharmacal Research> in 2017. The purport of the thesis is that maintaining a healthy diet and living in a healthy environment suppresses the generation of bad genetic factors and promotes the generation of good factors in later generations.
He majored in ’Food Hygiene and Pharmacology’. He graduated from the Department of Pharmacy at Pusan National University and received a doctorate in pharmacy from Seoul National University. In 1986, Professor Choi, who joined Pukyong National University (Dept. of Food Science and Nutrition) as the first professor from pharmaceutical university and retired in last February, has devoted himself to ’searching for useful substances for human health’ for 34 years. His research subjects include gom-pi(seaweed, Ecklonia stolonifera), sea mustard, seaweed fulvescens, Gloiopeltis furcata, Sargassum seaweed (Sargassum serratifolium), and seaweeds such as seaweed fusiforme (Hizikia fusiforme (HARVEY) OKAMURA). He is one of the leading groups in Korea in research on the development of new natural medicine using these marine biological resources. He has published more than 400 papers (300 SCI-level) and has applied for 10 patents.
