Research for Measurement Development for Tourism Destination and competitive advantages
Professor Sul Hoon-ku

The results of research showing that the competitive advantages of tourism destinations can be evaluated using two factors, business environment, and competitive advantages, are drawing public attention. The thesis, Measurement Development for Tourism Destination Business Environment and Competitive Advantages, released by Professor Sul Hoon-ku (Division of Business Administration) of Pukyong National University is the research paper. This paper, which was published in the SSCI (Social Science Citation Index)-level international journal <Sustainability> on the 16th of October, received academic attention by developing and presenting a measuring tool that can evaluate the competitive advantage of tourism destinations. <Sustainability> is the top academic journal in the field of social science with an academic impact factor of 2.79 points (out of 3 points). In this paper, focusing on the fact that it is difficult to figure out the competitive advantage factors for the success of tourism destinations, Prof. Sul elicited each indicator to measure the business environment and competitive advantage from here.
According to the research results, 6 indicators of the business environment for tourism destinations were dynamism, hostility, turbulence, investment, information technology, and governance. In addition, 7 indicators of competitive advantage were resistance, regional acceptability, accessibility, cost justification, uniqueness, supportability, and image consistency. Prof. Sul explained in the thesis, "Managers of tourism destinations can predict the success of tourism destinations as they can figure out what competitive advantage factors they have compared to other competitive tourist destinations through such business environment factors and competitive advantage indicators." He said, "Recently, as each tourist destination is competing to attract many tourists, the results of this study are expected to help establish the management strategy of the tourist destination." Professor Sul made this achievement by pursuing research over 4 years as part of the National Research Foundation of Korea’s support project for mid-level researchers.
