“한국전쟁 때 야전병원이었던 조그만 대학이 이제 세계 65개국에서 유학을 오는 글로벌대학이자 해양과학의 메카로 발전했습니다. 오늘날 한국의 번영은 UN참전용사 여러분이 목숨을 걸고 나라를 지켜주신 덕분입니다.”
동원그룹 김재철 회장은 7월 28일 오후 한국전쟁 정전 60주년(정전협정 1953. 7. 27.)을 맞아 뉴질랜드 존 필립 키 총리를 비롯 뉴질랜드 참전용사와 가족 등 120여명을 자신의 모교인 부산 대연동 소재 국립 부경대학교(총장 김영섭)로 초청, 동원장보고관에서 감사 오찬행사를 가졌다.
김 회장은 1958년 부경대 전신 부산수산대 어로과를 졸업한 후 바다로 진출, 동원그룹을 연매출 4조2천억 원대의 글로벌기업으로 성장시킨 주인공. 그가 1954년부터 1958년 2월까지 다닌 부경대 전신 부산수산대는 한국전쟁의 상흔을 간직한 생생한 역사의 현장이다.
대학 건물은 전쟁 직후부터 1957년까지 7년 동안이나 징발되어 전쟁 부상자 치료를 위한 미국 및 스웨덴 야전병원으로 사용되면서 교육환경이 황폐화됐던 아픈 역사를 안고 있다. 또 이 학교에는 미군이 전쟁 때 임시 사령부 건물로 썼던 ‘워커하우스’가 있다.
당시 미8군 사령관 월튼 워커 중장은 북한군이 낙동강 전선까지 밀고 내려와 낙동강 방어선(일명 워커라인)이 무너질 위기에 처하자 통신장비를 보호하려고 대구의 미8군 사령부를 1950년 9월 6일 이 건물로 옮겨 전장을 진두지휘했다.
김 회장은 “1954년 입학 당시 대학 건물이 미군에 수용돼 있던 터라 판잣집 같은 데서 수업을 받아야했는데 오늘날 세계 65개국에서 학문을 배우러 오는 세계적 대학으로 발전했다.”면서, “우리가 전쟁의 온갖 고난을 극복하고 글로벌 경제대국으로 발전한 모습을 보여드리면서 참전용사들의 소중한 희생에 감사드리고 싶었다.”고 말했다. 김 회장은 뉴질랜드 명예영사를 맡아 양국 간 친선 우호를 위해 노력해왔다.
이 행사는 국가보훈처 주관으로 이날 뉴질랜드 호주 캐나다 네덜란드 등 12개국 참전용사 초청 ‘UN참전국 정부 대표단 UN기념공원 추모행사’의 일환으로 열린 것이다. 뉴질랜드는 한국전쟁에 6,000여명을 파병해 41명이 전사했고 유해 34기가 UN기념공원에 봉안되어 있다.
이날 존 필립 키 총리는 “전쟁을 딛고 한국이 오늘날 경제적 성공을 이루고 국제적으로 인정받는 국가로 성장한 데는 교육의 역할이 컸다고 생각한다.”면서, “김영섭 총장님을 비롯한 교육자들이 한국 젊은이들을 변화시켜 국가발전을 이끌었다고 생각한다.”고 말했다. 그는 “조만간 양국 간 FTA를 통해 그동안 우리가 맺어온 좋은 관계가 더욱 깊어지고 넓어질 것으로 기대한다.”고 말했다.<부경투데이>

"The small university which is used to be a field hospital during thein Korean War has been changed into a globalas the globla university, visited by 65 countries and the is now the mecca of marine science. The current prosperity of now is all thanks to the UN veterans and their sacrifices that they made for this land."
On the 26th July, Kim Jae-cheol, the chairman of Dongwon Group, invited John Phillip Key who is the Pprime Mminister of New Zealand, and 120 veterans and their families on 26th July to his former university PKNU which is located in placed on Daeyeon-Dong in Busan. The event was for celebrating the 60th anniversary of the ceasefire of the Korean War; which took place the agreement was on 27th July in 1953. They had a luncheon together as the chairman and president of Pukyong National University welcomed them and appreciated their sacrifices.
Kim Jae-cheol who graduated from the fisheries department of the National Fisheries University of Busan, which was formerly Pukyong National University, in 1958, and he developed Dongwon Group which is aas the huge global corporation which has annual sales of 4 trillion 200 billion won. The National Fisheries University of Busan which the chairman attendedwas in from 1954 to 1958 was an alive page of history what had scar of Korean War.
The buildings in the university werewas used as the field hospital for the injured American and Swedish soldiers for seven years from right after the Korean Wwar finished up untilto 1957, so it hasd a sad history. of being ruined. In addition, this university still has the building "Walker House" which was used as the temporaryl headquarters of the American army. At that time, Walton Walker who was the commander of the eighth US army moved the army’s headquarters to the building in this university on 6th September 1950 to protect communication equipment and command efficiently as they were in danger of losing lines of defense atof Nakdong river, which is now referred to as called as Walker Line.
Kim said that he was studying in poor conditions of buildings because all of the buildings were being used by the American army. However, he mentioned that now the universityplace has been changed to a place where students from 65 countries come to study, so he feels happy to show our developed country as one of global economic powers through every hardship and he feels expressed his appreciation of the to veterans’ noble sacrifices for us. Kim has been working hard as an honorary consul of New Zealand in order to further develop the for relationship between Korean and New Zealand.
This event was one of the tribunal events inviting 12 delegations of UN combatant nations such as New Zealand, Canada, Australia, and the Netherlands which was conducted by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs. New Zealand dispatched around 6000 soldiers for the Korean War, 41 of them died, and 34 of their bodies are buriedstaying in a peace in the UN Memorial Cemetery.
"I think that the reason how Korea could become a one of famous country in the world, even though it endured hard times, is because of its education system.it had been through hard time is education. I’m sure that many educators in Korea such as Kim Young-Seup lead the development of this country as they lead the change of young people here. I’m expecting that the relationship between both countries will be strengthened with the FTA soon," John Phillip Key, the Pprime Mminister, said on this day.<Pukyong today>
