올해로 대학 통합 20주년을 맞은 부경대학교(총장 김영섭)가 각종 대학 교육지표에서 급성장세를 보이며 발전한 것으로 나타났다.
9일 부경대학교에 따르면 부산수산대학교와 부산공업대학교가 1996년 7월 6일 국립 종합대학교 간 최초의 통합으로 탄생한 부경대는 지난 20년 사이 외국인 유학생, 재정, 장학금, 연구비 규모 등이 최대 55배나 껑충 뛰었다.
가장 큰 성장세를 보인 분야는 외국인 유학생 수로 통합 직후 5개국 18명에서 20년 만에 69개국 995명으로 국가 수로는 14배, 유학생 수는 55배나 성장했다.
장학금 규모도 통합 직후 49억8천만 원에서 최근에는 473억6천만 원으로 9배 이상 증가했다. 학생생활관도 통합 직후 145실 수용학생 462명에서 현재는 1,636실 3,240명으로 생활관 실수는 무려 11배, 수용학생 수는 7배나 급증했다.
교내외 교원 연구비는 통합 20년 만에 82억8천만 원에서 518억7천만 원으로 6배 이상 증가했고, 대학 재정 규모는 통합 당시 694억8천만 원에서 최근 3,119억 원으로 4.5배 가까이 늘었다. 도서관 장서수도 32만7천권 규모에서 3배 이상 늘어 100만권을 넘어섰다.
이 같은 저력으로 부경대는 세계적으로 가장 많이 인용되는 상위 10%의 논문 비율을 조사 발표한 ‘2015 라이덴 랭킹’에서 생물의학분야 국내 1위를 차지했다. 전임교원 논문(한국연구재단 등재지 기준)수는 국립대 1위를 기록했으며 졸업생 취업률도 A그룹 국립대학 1위에 랭크됐다.
특히 부경대는 세계 최초의 수산관련 유엔대학인 세계수산대학 유치 결정을 비롯, 대학인문역량강화사업, 평생교육 단과대학 지원사업, 연구마을사업, 거점형 창업선도대학, 해양융복합 바이오닉스 기술개발연구단 등 국책사업도 잇달아 선정돼 교육·연구 경쟁력 강화와 지역산업 발전은 물론 교육을 통한 공적개발원조(ODA)의 새로운 플랫폼으로 부상하고 있다.
한편 부경대는 9일 오전 11시 대학본부 대회의실에서 개교 70주년 및 대학통합 20주년 기념식 행사를 가졌다. 개교 70주년은 광복 이후 대학역사를 기준(국립대학설치령)으로 정해진 것이다.
이날 행사에서는 통합 20년간의 발전상을 담은 역사동영상 상영과 장기근속공로자, 학생 포상자, 부경대학교 학술상, 신진 연구자상, 산학협력상, 대학발전공로자, 총동창회장상 등을 시상했다.<부경투데이>

- University indexes showed a drastic rise
Pukyong National University, facing the 20th integration anniversary this year, appeared to show rapid growth in several educational indicators.
On 6 July 1996, the National Fisheries University of Busan and the Busan National University of Technology merged to form the Pukyong National University, the first consolidated university between national universities. During twenty years since the merge, several indexes including the number of foreign students and the amount of budget, scholarship and research funding have increased up to 55-fold.
The biggest improvement was seen in the area of international student, from 18 students from 5 countries to 995 students from 69 countries after 20 years, having increased 14-fold in the number of countries and 55-fold in the number of foreign students.
The scale of scholarship has also increased more than 9-fold from ₩4,980,000,000 to ₩47,360,000,000. The university dormitory now boasts the capacity to house 3,240 students in 1,636 rooms, from 462 students in 145 rooms right after the merge, having risen eleven-fold in the number of rooms and seven-fold in the number of boarding students.
The amount of research funding has surged an over six-fold from ₩8,280,000,000 to ₩51,870,000,000, and the budget amount has risen about 4.5-fold from ₩69,480,000,000 to ₩311,900,000,000. The number of books in the library has been enhanced more than three-fold from 327,000 to over a million.
With all this development, in 2015, PKNU took first place in the biomedicine category of the CWTS Leiden Ranking, which announced the world’s top 10% most cited research papers. The number of research paper by full time professors indexed in the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) and the graduate employment rate were ranked the best among the national universities and the A Group national universities respectively.
Moreover, PKNU was selected as the site for the World Fisheries University, affiliated university of United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and also for other national projects including the initiative for COllege of humanities’ Research and Education (CORE), the College for Lifelong Learning, the Research Village, the Leading Universities for Startup Business, and the Center for Ocean & IT Convergence Bionics Technology Development and Research, enhancing its educational and research competitiveness and the region’s business climate, and is evolving into a new platform for the official development assistance (ODA) through education.
At 11 a.m. on May 9, PKNU held the ceremony to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the foundation and the 20th of the consolidation. The 70th anniversary was decided following the history of the university since the liberation, in accordance with the act provided for the establishment of national university.
At the ceremony, historical video of the university for the 20 years of consolidation was aired, and many prizes, including the awards to long service employees, the student rewards, the PKNU Scholarship Awards, the New Researcher Awards, the Industry-University Cooperation Awards, the University Development Achievement Awards, the Alumni Awards, were given out. <Pukyong Today>
