“모교에 진 마음의 빚 갚으러 왔습니다.” 10일 오전, 한 노신사가 부경대학교 대학본부 6층 대외협력과를 찾아 2천만 원짜리 자기앞수표 1장을 꺼내 전달하며 이같이 말했다.
50여년 만에 모교를 찾았다는 그는 “미국에 이민 가기 위해 살림을 정리하다보니 모교에 진 빚이 마음에 걸려 이렇게 빚을 갚고 떠나려고 왔다.”며 이 돈을 발전기금으로 기부했다. 그가 말한 빚이란 무얼까? 신 동문은 “가난했던 고등학교 때 배를 타면 먹고 사는 데 걱정 없다는 이야기를 듣고 부산수산대학(부경대 전신)에 입학했다. 당시 신입생 250명 가운데 수석으로 입학해 장학금을 받고 공부할 수 있었다.”고 말했다. 그는 대학을 졸업하고 1964년부터는 10년간 원양어선을 타고 태평양, 인도양, 대서양을 누볐고, 1974년부터 1975년까지는 가나의 항구도시 테마에서 태창수산의 아프리카 주재원으로 근무했다. 이후 1975년부터 20년 동안 태창수산에서 대일본 참치수출 업무를 맡는 등 바다와 함께 살아왔다. 그는 “배고팠던 시절 장학금을 받으며 공부할 수 있게 해준 모교에 대한 고마움을 잊지 못한다. 그리고 그때 배웠던 지식과 경험들로 인생을 잘 꾸려올 수 있었다.”고 말했다. 얼마 뒤면 미국에 있는 딸들과 함께 살기 위해 한국을 떠난다는 그는 “예전의 나처럼 어려운 환경 속에서 공부하는 후배들이 희망을 갖고 힘을 낼 수 있으면 좋겠다.”고 말했다. 부경대는 이 발전기금을 형편이 어렵지만 학업에 힘쓰는 학생들을 위한 장학금으로 활용할 계획이다. <부경투데이> "I came here to pay my debt of gratitude to my alma mater." From 1974 to 1975, he worked as an African expatriate in Taechang Fisheries in Ghana's port city theme. Since 1975, he has lived with sea as a member of Taechang Fisheries for 20 years, serving as a Japanese tuna export business. "I cannot forget the gratitude of my alma mater, who has been able to study with scholarships in times of hunger. And I was able to build up my life with the knowledge and experiences I had learned at the time. " He said that he would leave Korea soon to live with his daughters in the United States. "I wish the juniors those who study in a difficult environment like me could have the power with hope ."
