부경대학교 동문(어업학과 1958년 졸업)인 김재철 동원그룹 회장은 “식품업계에 만연해 있는 경쟁업체 따라하기를 벗어나 동원만의 제품을 개발해 성공시키겠다.”고 선언했다.
어떤 상품이 잘되면 따라서 그 제품을 본 딴 ‘모방제품(미투 제품)’을 만들지 않고 독자적인 제품 만들기에 주력하겠다는 말이다. 한국경제신문은 이 기사에서 “국내 ‘빅3’ 식품회사인 동원그룹 회장이 미투 제품을 만들지 않겠다고 밝힘에 따라 업계의 이 같은 ‘상품 베끼기’ 관행이 개선될지 관심이 쏠린다.”고 썼다. 김 회장은 이를 위해 “동원F&B를 비롯한 동원그룹 계열사들의 연구개발(R&D) 투자를 확대하겠다.”고 인터뷰에서 밝혔다. 기사는 (김 회장이) “미투 제품에서 벗어나 동원만의 차별화된 식품을 내놓을 수 있는 길은 R&D뿐”이라며 “그래야만 새로운 해외 시장도 개척할 수 있다”고 말했다고 전했다. 이날 인터뷰 기사에 따르면, 동원F&B는 올해 R&D 예산을 200억원으로 책정했다. 지난해 회사 순이익(320억원)의 63%에 달하는 금액이다. 이를 통해 연구시설을 확충하고, 올해 초 50명이던 연구인력도 연말까지 100명 이상으로 늘릴 계획이라고 한다. 그럼 이 같은 동원의 의지로 그동안 내놓은 ‘국내 최초의 제품’은 어떤 것이 있을까? 기사는 동원그룹 관계자의 말을 인용, “R&D 투자를 강화한 이후 새우소를 적용한 만두인 ‘개성왕새우만두’와 액상형 간편대용식인 ‘덴마크밀스드링크’ 등을 출시하는 성과를 거뒀다”고 소개했다. 이 관계자는 기사에서 “올해 선보인 50개 상품은 모두 미투 제품이 아니라 국내에서 최초로 내놓은 것”이라고 밝혔다. 지난해에도 95개 신제품이 개발돼 출시됐다고 한다. 이 기사는 “김 회장은 국내외 식품 기업 인수합병(M&A)도 적극 검토하겠다고 밝혔다.”고 소해했다. 김 회장은 “동원그룹과 합쳐져 시너지가 나는 회사라면 어떤 회사라도 적극적으로 M&A를 검토하고 있다”며 “미래 성장동력 확보를 위해 머뭇거리지 않을 것”이라고 기사에서 밝혔다. 김 회장은 한국 식품산업이 해외로 진출한 1세대 경영인으로 꼽힌다. 부경대 전신인 부산수산대 4학년 때 실습생 신분으로 우리나라 최초의 원양어선인 지남호를 타고 남태평양으로 참치잡이를 나갔던 그는 1969년 동원산업을 창업, 참치 수출에 나섰기 때문이다. 기사는 “올해 5월 기준 자산 8조원으로 재계 45위인 동원그룹은 동원엔터프라이즈를 지주회사로 동원산업 동원F&B 동원시스템즈 동원홈푸드 등 22개 계열사를 두고 있다.”고 밝혔다. <부경투데이> Kim Jae-cheol, a chairman of Dongwon Group, and an alumni of Pukyong National University (graduated from Fisheries Department in 1958), declared, "We will develop and succeed Dongwon group’s products without following the competitors products in the food industry." Chairman Kim is considered to be the first generation of Korean food industry to enter overseas. He was a trainee at Pukyong National University, the former Busan Fisheries University in Busan, Korea in the fourth grade and went to the South Pacific for a tuna catch on the first vessel, Ji-Nam, the first Korean fishing boat, because he founded Dongwon Industries in 1969 and started exporting tuna.
