영국 현지에서 6‧25전쟁 참전용사들을 만나 보은활동을 펼친 한국의 대학생들이 영국 언론에 크게 보도되는 등 주목받고 있다. 화제의 주인공은 부산 남구 대연동 소재 국립 부경대학교(총장 김영섭)의 평화봉사단 ‘부경UN서포터즈’(대표 안태언‧국제통상학부 3학년) 대원 15명. 이들은 영국 현지시간으로 지난 1월 7일 오후 맨체스터 소재 빌리지 호텔에서 ‘영국 한국전쟁 참전용사협회 맨체스터 지부’ 브리안 호(Brian Hough) 지부장 등 11명의 참전용사들이 참석한 가운데 보은행사를 펼쳤다. 이날 학생들은 감사의 편지를 80대의 노병들 앞에서 낭독하고, 감사패도 전달하며 전쟁에서 나라를 지켜준 이들에게 고마움을 전했다. 학생들의 행사를 지켜보던 몇몇 노병들은 눈시울을 붉히기도 했다. 부경대는 세계 유일의 유엔묘지인 부산 남구 대연동 UN기념공원 바로 옆에 위치한 대학이다. 유엔서포터즈 학생들은 6‧25전쟁에서 목숨을 바치고 잠든 용사들의 희생정신을 기리기 위해 헌화하고 빗돌을 닦는 등 평화봉사활동을 펴고 있다. 참전용사인 브리안 호 지부장은 “우리를 잊지 않고 찾아오고, 또 한국에 잠든 우리의 전우들을 돌보고 있는 부경대 학생들이 놀랍고 감사하다.”고 소감을 밝혔다. 이날 행사에는 맨체스터 탬사이드의 데니스 와드(Denise Ward) 시장이 직접 참석해 부경대생들의 방문을 환영했고, 영국 <BBC> 등 현지 언론들이 취재활동을 펴는 등 관심이 뜨거웠다. 데니스 와드 시장은 학생들에게 감사장을 수여하고, “부경대 학생들의 이번 방문을 계기로 우리 시도 참전용사의 희생정신을 후세들에게 전하기 위해 교육과 캠페인을 펼치겠다.”고 말했다. 맨체스터 신문인 <Tameside Reporter>는 이날 한국 대학생들의 방문소식을 ‘South Korean students give thanks war veterans’라는 제목의 커버스토리로 비중 있게 소개했다. 부경UN서포터즈 대표 안태언 학생은 “70여 년 전 이역만리까지 오셔서 죽을 고비를 넘기며 우리를 지켜주신 용사들을 직접 마주하니 가슴이 뭉클했다.”고 말했다. 2009년 창단한 이 봉사단은 UN기념공원에 안장된 전몰용사들의 넋을 돌보고, 세계의 6‧25전쟁 참전용사를 직접 찾아가 보은행사를 펼치고 있다. 영국은 6‧25전쟁에 5만6천명을 파병한 나라로 이 가운데 1,177명이 전사했고, 전사자 중 884명은 UN기념공원에 안장돼 있다. <부경투데이> It is noteworthy that Korean college students who have participated in the activities of meeting Korean war veterans have been widely reported in the British press. The event was attended by Mayor Denise Ward of Manchester Tamside, who welcomed the visit of the Pukyong students and the local media, including the British BBC, were interested in the news. Mayor Dennis Ward presented a letter of appreciation to the students and said, "We will continue our education and campaign to bring the sacrifices of our veterans to our generations as a result of this Pukyong students' visit." The Manchester newspaper <Tameside Reporter> introduced the news of Korean college students to the cover story titled 'South Korean students give thanks war veterans'. An An Tae-un representative of Pukyong UN Supporters said, "It was heartbreaking when I reminded the fact that they came to the Korean peninsula more than 70 years ago, and guarded us from the dead." The Volunteer Corps, which was founded in 2009, carries out the events of taking care of the souls of the warriors buried in UN Memorial Park and visiting the 6,25 war veterans of the world.
