저 사진 속 노을, 참 곱고 아름답지요?
며칠 전 채영희 교수님(국어국문학과)이 저녁 무렵의 부경대학교 하늘을 폰카로 찍어 홍보팀으로 보내준 사진이랍니다.
그런데요. 이거 좀 야단났습니다. 이 글을 읽고 나면 그런 생각, 노을이 아름답다는 당신의 생각이 바뀔지도 모르겠습니다. 사연을 따라가 보시죠.
채 교수님은 그 때 부경대 환경·해양관 앞에서 사진을 찍고 계셨는데요,
때마침 그 곁을 지나던 최철웅 교수님(공간정보시스템공학과)과 만나게 되었답니다.
최철웅: 교수님, 뭘 그리 열심히 찍고 계시나요?
채영희: 노을이 참 예뻐서요.
최철웅: 예쁘긴 뭐가 예뻐요. 그거 다 먼지예요. 대기오염이 심해서 그런 거예요.
채영희: ???
최철웅: 대기 중에 먼지 같은 아주 작은 알갱이들이 빛에 반사되어 그런 색이 나오죠. 오염물질이 많을수록 하늘이 붉게 보인답니다.
채영희: 아니. 어쩜. 그렇게 확 깨게 하실 거예요 ㅠㅠ
인문학자(채영희 교수)와 공학자(최철웅 교수)의 짧은 만남은 이렇게 끝났답니다.
채영희 교수님으로부터 그 억울한(?) 사연을 듣게 된 부경투데이는 최철웅 교수님께 전화를 걸었습니다. 노을을 보는 최 교수님 생각이 궁금했거든요.
최 교수님은 이렇게 답했습니다.
“우리 같은 공학자들은 자연 현상에 대해 원인을 파악해 전체를 이해하려고 노력하니까, 그런 노을현상이 곱게 느껴지지 않고 오히려 슬프죠. 그만큼 대기오염이 심하다는 증거니까요.”
그리고 잠시 머뭇거리시던 최 교수님은 이렇게 덧붙였습니다.
“그런데 저도 나이가 드니까 점점 노을이 예뻐 보이기는 하대요…”
다시 채영희 교수님께 전화를 걸었습니다. 실체(노을이 먼지가 반사된 것이라는!)를 알고 난 뒤 인문학자는 어떤 생각을 하게 됐는지 궁금했거든요.
채 교수님은 우선 “저렇게 고운 노을이 먼지였다는 것을 한 번도 생각해본 적이 없었다.”고 슬퍼했습니다. 까르르 웃으면서.
그러면서 그는 “노을이 먼지라는 것을 알고 나서 스스로를 경계하게 됐다.”면서, “내가 안다고 생각하는 것이 모두 참이 아닐 수도 있다는 것을 새삼 인식하는 계기가 됐다.”고 말했습니다.
그러면서 이렇게 덧붙였습니다.
“실체를 알고 난 뒤에도, 그러니까 그 반사된 먼지에서도 여전히 아름다움을 느낀다면 진정한 아름다움을 아는 사람이 아닐까요?”
동의합니다, 언제나 사물의 실체를 정확하게 보려는 노력은 참으로 필요한 일!

The sunset in that picture is so pretty and beautiful, isnt’ it?
A few days ago, Professor Chae Young-hee (Dept. of Korean Language and Literature) took a picture of the Pukyong National University sky at evening and sent it to the PR team.
By the way. This is a big deal. After reading this article, you might change your mind that the idea is beautiful. Let’s follow the story.
Professor Chae was taking pictures in front of Pukyong National University College of Environment and Marine Sciences and Technology,
Just in time, she got to meet with Professor Choi Cheol-woong (Dept. of Spatial Information Systems Engineering).
Choi Cheol-woong : Professor, are you taking pictures so hard?
Chae Young-hee : The sunset is so beautiful.
Choi Cheol-woong : What’s pretty? It’s all dust. It’s because of the air pollution.
Chae Young-hee : ???
Choi Cheol-woong : Tiny grains, like dust, are reflected in the air and come out of that color. The more pollutants, the redder the sky looks.
Chae Young-hee : Oh, no... how.. Why are you breaking the mood.. ㅠㅠ
The short encounter between the humanities scholar (Professor Chae Young-hee) and the engineer (Professor Choi Cheol-woong) ended like this.
Pukyong Today called Professor Choi Cheol-woong when we heard the sad(?) story from Professor Chae Young-hee. We were curious about Professor Choi’s idea of watching the sunset.
Professor Choi replied as below.
“Engineers like us are trying to understand the whole of the natural phenomena and try to understand the whole, so it does not feel fine and it is sad. It’s proof that the air pollution is that much.”
Professor Choi, who hesitated for a while, added,
“But as I get older, the sunset looks pretty…”
I called Professor Chae-hee again. I was curious to see what the humanists thought after knowing the reality (the sunset was a reflection of the dust!).
Professor Chae first grieved, "I never thought that such a fine sunset was dust." Laughing at me.
She said, “When I knew that the glow was dust, I became alert to myself. It was a chance to recognize that what I think I know may not be true.”
And she added,
“If you still feel beauty in the reflected dust even after you know the reality, are you not the one who really knows beauty?”
I agree, it is always necessary to try to see the reality of things accurately!
