부경대학교 동문인 가수 헤이즈(28)가 최근 언론 매체에 잇따라 비중 있게 소개되고 있어 눈길을 끌고 있다.

헤이즈는 부경대 경영학부 2010학번 장다혜 씨다.

그는 2014년 싱글 앨범 ‘조금만 더 방황하고’로 데뷔했다. 2015년 <Mnet>의 오디션 프로그램 <언프리티 랩스타2>에 출연해 래퍼로서 대중들에게 눈도장을 찍은 싱어송 라이터다. 데뷔 5년째인 지금은 가장 핫한 ‘음원 강자’로 떠올랐다.

이번 앨범이 발표되면서 언론에 비친 장 동문, 헤이즈의 활약상을 소개한다.

<부산일보>는 14일 23면에서 「헤이즈의 그윽한 선율·몽환적 음색, 가을이 흐른다」라는 제목의 기사를 크게 실었다.

이 기사는 “13일 선보인 ‘만추’(晩秋)는 헤이즈의 가을 감성을 듬뿍 담은 다섯 번째 미니앨범.”이라면서, “싱어송 라이터답게 이번 신보도 대부분 직접 만든 곡으로 꾸몄다.”고 소개했다.

이번에 내놓은 헤이즈의 신곡에 대해 기사는 “아련하고 그윽한 선율과 몽환적인 헤이즈의 음색이 어우러져 짙은 가을 향취를 풍기는 곡.”이라면서, “‘미스드 콜(Missed Call)’을 빼면 모두 자작곡.”이라고 밝혔다.

헤이즈는 이렇게 멋진 노래를 어떻게 직접 만들어 냈을까?

기사는 헤이즈가 부경대학교에서 경영학을 전공했다는 사실을 소개했다. 헤이즈는 “음악을 전문적으로 배운 적은 없어 경험과 감으로 작업하는 편” “일상에서 떠오르는 멜로디나 노랫말을 틈틈이 메모해둔다”고 이 기사에서 밝혔다.

이 인터뷰에서 헤이즈는 “음악이 하고 싶어 무작정 상경했다.”면서, “그 때를 생각하면서 음악 작업을 게을리 하지 않으려고 항상 노력한다.”고 말했다.

<한겨레>도 이날 21면 톱 박스 기사로 헤이즈의 다섯 번째 미니 앨범 발매 소식을 크게 전했다. 기사 제목은 「시대를 타고난 ‘음원 강자’, “찌질한 노랫말 실제 내 얘기”」.

이 기사는 “헤이즈는 그동안 ‘비도 오고 그래서’(멜론 차트 1위 총 34회), ‘저 별(7회)’, ‘널 너무 모르고’(6회) 등의 노래로 여러 차례 음원차트 1위를 하면서 ‘음원 강자’가 됐다.”고 소개했다.

기사는 “특히 2017년에 발표된 ‘비도 오고 그래서’는 멜론 100위 차트에 476일 연속 진입하는 기록을 세웠다. 이 노래는 비만 오면 ‘소환’되는 장마철 대표 시즌송이기도 하다.”고 밝혔다.

이렇게 대중으로부터 사랑받는 비결은 무엇일까?

한겨레 기사는 “일기처럼 써내려간 노래 가사가 많은 공감을 불러일으킨다는 점이 이유로 꼽힌다. 헤이즈가 직접 작사한 노래들에는 슬픔을 넘어 찌질함과 구차함도 고스란히 담겨있다.”고 분석했다.

이 기사는 “비음 섞인 특유의 발성으로 부르는 노래와 담백하게 내뱉는 랩이 헤이즈의 매력.”이라고 소개했다.

이밖에도 헤이즈의 신보 ‘만추’는 많은 언론사에서 소개됐다.

그리고 <스포츠투데이>는 「헤이즈 “음악하려 대학교 수석, 1시간 자며 공부했다”」라는 제목의 기사에서 헤이즈가 부산서 서울로 가 음악을 하게 된 사연을 소개했다.

헤이즈는 이 기사에서 “아버지 반대가 너무 심했다. 대학교 성적이 많이 안 좋았다.”면서, “‘성적이 걸림돌이면 성적으로 보여드려야겠다’ 해서 수석을 하고 1년 휴학을 허락받고 서울에 왔다.”고 밝혔다. 이 기사는 “(성적 1등 하기 위해) 악착같이 했다. 하루에 한 시간 잤다.”는 헤이즈의 말을 덧붙였다.

그는 어떻게 래퍼, 뮤지션이 되려고 생각했을까?

그와 관련된 흥미로운 사연이 있다.

부경대학교 부경교지편집위원회가 발간한 <PK&U Magazine> 36호(2016 SPRING)에 실린 ‘헤이즈 인터뷰’에 나오는 사연이다.

헤이즈는 이 인터뷰에서 “가사를 쓸 때만 해도 래퍼, 가수 같은 거는 그냥 취미였다.”면서, “경영학과에 성덕현 교수님이라고 재밌고 무섭기로 유명한 교수님 수업시간에 맨 뒷자리에서 이어폰 꼽고 가사를 쓰다 걸렸다.”고 했다.

“그거 보고 교수님이 ‘너 뭐 하냐.’ 하시더라고요.
그래서 제가 ‘가사를 쓰고 있었습니다.’
‘그걸 왜 쓰는데.’
‘제가 가사 쓰는 거 곡 만드는 걸 좋아해요.’
이러니까 저는 (교수님이) 완전 소리를 지르실 줄 알았죠.
그런데 ‘그걸 하면 되잖아’ 이러시는 거예요.
그 때까지는 한 번도 이거를 내가 해야겠다는 생각을 해본 적이 없었는데,
성덕현 교수님이 ‘네가 나중에 할머니가 되어도 뜻이 있으면 노인 대학에 공부를 할 수 있는 거고, 아줌마가 돼서도 뜻만 있으면 다시 공부를 할 수 있다. 근데 네가 그 나이 때 랩을 할 수 있을 거 같냐.’고 하셨어요.
그 얘기를 듣는데 ‘헉, 맞네.’ 그런 생각이 드는 거예요.
그래서 대학 3학년 때 처음으로 래퍼가 되어야겠다고, 뮤지션이 되어야겠다는 꿈이 명확하게 생긴 거예요.”

Singer Heize, 28 years old, alumni of Pukyong National University, has been attracting attention since it has been introduced in the media recently.

Hayes is Jang Da-hye from the division of Business Administration, Pukyong National University and enrolled in 2010.

In this interview, Hayes said, “I came to Seoul blindly because I wanted to do music.", and she added, "I always try to avoid neglecting my music work, thinking of those days."

<Hankyoreh> also announced the release of Hayes' fifth mini album as a top box article on 21 pages. The title of the article is 「Born in the age of 'strong contender in music', "The nerdy lyrics is my story”」.

How did she think she wanted to be a rapper, musician?

There is an interesting story related to that.

Heize said in an interview, “When I wrote lyrics, things like rappers and singers were just a hobby. In the business class, Professor Sung Deok-hyun, a funny and scary professor, I took the earphones and wrote the lyrics from the back of the class and I was caught by my professor.”

So I said 'writing lyrics.'
'Why do you write that?'
'I like writing lyrics, I like making songs.'
So I thought (professor) would scream out.

Professor Sung Deok-hyun said, 'If you have the dream later even if you become a grandmother, you can study at an old university. If you become aunt, you can study again. But do you think you can rap at that age?'
When I hear about that, 'well, that is right.'
So, when I was in my third year of college, I had a clear dream of becoming a rapper and becoming a musician.”
