'Amundsen in Korea, Professor Lee Byeong-don of National Fisheries University of Busan'
The book 「Kakaotalk with Antarctica」 was introduced by 'Kook-je Daily News reporter Oh Sang-jun.

The first person who stepped into the Antarctic land in Korea is Lee Byeong-don, alumni of Pukyong National University. Recently, a book that introduces the story of Antarctic expedition of alumni Lee Byeong-don draws public's attention.

It is the book recently published 「Kakaotalk with Antarctica」 (published in rye field). This book, titled "The Story of Antarctica so far but yet so close" was written by the Kook-je Daily News reporter Oh Sang-jun.

This book is composed of seven parts including 'The Secret of Antarctic Life', and the story of Lee Byeong-don of Pukyong National University appears in chapter 2 'Korea's Antarctic Pioneering History'.

The title of the article was 'Amundsen in Korea, Professor Lee Byeong-don of National Fisheries University of Busan.'

The book asks "Who is the first person in Korea stepped on Antarctica?", and answers "The man was a professor at National Fisheries University of Busan who was called to his rest, the Busan man, Lee Byeong-don (1928-1995)."

The alumni Lee Byeong-don who graduated the Marine Biology of Pukyong National University (Formerly National Fisheries University of Busan) in 1949, when, why and how did he make his way to Antarctica?

According to this book, Professor Lee was a researcher of the US-Argentina joint Antarctic Ocean Survey team on March 6, 1963, studying at the A&M University of Texas, USA and taking the Argentine Navy research ship "Capitan Canepa" visited Almirante Brown base in Antarctica.

The book states "This is 15 years and 22 years ahead of the Antarctic scientific exploration of the Antarctic Expedition in November~December of 1985, and the Korean krill test research ship "North and South" from December 1978 to March 1979."

This book introduces "Professor Lee visited the Antarctic in September of the same year and July of 1964".

The book says "He returned to Korea in November 1965 after receiving a Ph.D. in research on the distribution and biomass of zooplankton in the Drake Strait north of Kinji Island, where the Sejong Science Base is located", and states "This article was featured in an article entitled "Man on the continent of Antarctica, Professor Lee Byeong-don of National Fisheries University of Busan." on November 20, 1965 in the Kook-je Daily News.

The Book introduces professor Lee, who graduated from National Fisheries University of Busan, and was a professor at National Fisheries University of Busan where his alma-mater, he went to the United States alone with 50 dollars and a camera in his pocket.

In this regard, Professor Lee In-seop of the Department of Advanced Materials Engineering, Dong-Eui University, the son of professor Lee, recalled in this book like this.

"My father left his four children and wife in 1959 when I was just six months old and went to study in the United States. It was aimed at solving the hungry food problem of the motherland after the Korean war.

This book introduces, "Professor Lee Byeong-don (after arriving in Antarctica) grabbed Krill at the Argentine Navy research ship and found that the taste is similar to that of shrimp. He insisted that if we turn whaling efforts into fishing krills, it will be a great help in solving the world's food and nutrition problems."

Meanwhile, the alumni Lee Byeong-don was a professor of Marine Bio-materials and Aquaculture at Pukyong National University (Formerly National Fisheries University of Busan) and 14th deans of National Fisheries University of Busan (1981.9 ~ 1985.9), served as inviting director of Korea Institute of Ocean science & Technology (KIOST)and president of Dong-Eui University. <Pukyong Today>
