'The Catholicism dreamed of Joseon to serve as a bridge to China and Japan.'
A Cooperative plan by PKNU and The Kookje Daily News <Northeast Asian Sea, sailing through humanities> 12th Edition

△ The Kookje Daily News with an article by Research Professor Seo Gwang-deok.

The twelveth story of <Northeast Asian Sea, sailing through humanities>, which is a cooperative plan by Pukyong National University's Humanity Korea Plus (HK+) project team (head, Son Dong-ju) and the Kookje Daily News was the 'Missionary'.

HK Research Professor Seo Gwang-deok of Pukyong National University started the article with the title of "Missionaries Crossing the Sea for the Gospel" on page 17 of the Kookje Daily News on the 29th.

"The westerners who came to the sea of Northeast Asia along the distant boat-way were not the only merchants. There were those who did not mind the voyage of suffering in the preaching of the word of God to the East, they were missionaries. "

Professor Seo said, "First of all, those who marked the beginning of East Asian missions in the sea of Northeast Asia were Jesuit missionaries of Catholicism."

"The activity of the Society of Jesus was that the religious groups of Portugal, Spain, and Northern Italy, who prayed for Catholic religious innovation in the flames of the Reformation, were the mainstayers.", and he analyzed that "Portugal and Spain have actively entered the Asian region in antagonistic times, and the Jesuits' East Asian missions have joined together."

According to Professor Seo, the first place in Asia to be the base of the Jesuit mission was India.

He said, "Japan was the first place where Jesuit missionaries first entered among the Northeast Asian region based on here (India).", he added, "The East Asian missions, which began with the arrival of St. Francis Javier of the Jesuits in 1549 in Kagoshima, southern Kyushu, Ultimately aimed at China mission."

Professor Seo wrote, "It is interesting to see that the Catholic Church was established in Korea without the entry of Western missionaries, which is the most Christian among the East Asian countries, "

He said, "One of the reason for the liberation of Protestantism is the Catholic doctrine that communicating with God must be through the priest, in that sense, it is ironic that without a priest or missionary, people read only the Catechism, and the Catholic Church of Korea was established only through correspondence with Jesuit missionaries in Beijing."

Professor Seo commented, "Some Jesuits were thinking of preaching the gospel using the Ming Dynasty and the Joseon invasion plan of Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, so it can be interpreted that it was trying to reopen that precedent in East Asia because of the colonization of the Americas played an important role in the success of the gospel." and he added, "The Jesuit mission strategy of reaching China through Joseon adopted a way to achieve Japanese mission through Joseon in 100 years."

"What we cannot miss in the Jesuits is that the Oriental classics that they have spread along with western culture have been introduced to Europe and have created a Chinese boom in Europe." He said, "Missionaries who came to the region of Northeast Asia for the East Asian evangelization need to confirm once again that they have supported this East-West civilization exchange."  <Pukyong Today>
