"I want to study madly."
"I want to study madly." It is a word from Choo Jin-soon (88 years old), an alumna graduated Busan Fisheries University in 1955 (formerly Pukyong National University). She entered the Department of Proliferation in 1951, now renamed the Department of Marine Bio-Materials and Aquaculture which marks her admission to the second female student at Busan Fisheries University. On May 7, the alumna Ms.Choo, Whom I met at a cafe in Oncheon-dong, Dongnae-gu, Busan, was a healthy, pleasant, and intelligent person at the age of 88. Three hours with her have passed in a flash. On the anniversary of the opening ceremony, former president Park Maeng-un recommended Ms.Choo's interview as a person who would give many stories to help her juniors. Why did she say she wanted to study hard when she became a college student who had lived a life to raise a son and a daughter as doctors and professors respectively? The year 1951, when Ms.Choo entered college, was during the Korean War. At that time, the current Daeyeon campus, where Busan Fisheries University was located, was taken to the government and used as a US military field hospital. Therefore, the students had to study at a temporary school building of Youngdo. She said, "Youngdo temporary school building was a shack, the bookshelf was narrow, and there was no library. I had to take the train and the bus alternately from Dongnae, where my house was located, to Youngdo for a long time, and I could not concentrate on studying in a messy war." I told that at the time of his admission, there were about 500 students at Busan Fisheries University, and only five students were female. It's 1 % of now. At present, there are 16,326 students in Pukyong National University, and the number of female students reached 7,591, which is 46.5 %. She opened her eyes wide with surprise with the numbers of student. How about university play culture then? She said, "Nampo-dong and Gwangbok-dong, which are close to Youngdo, were the stage. I watched a movie at the Dong-a theater, drank coffee at a local coffee shop, and listened to classical music. I heard a lot of Mendelssohn and enjoyed reading Pearl Buck." She said, "But I should have found what I wanted to do at that time, but it was a time when I could not find it and wandered. So if I become a university student again, I would like to study madly that I want to do." After graduating from university, she worked five years as a biology teacher in high school, and in her later life, she has always been devoted to the care of her children as a mother. what did she want to study? It was a 'gardening field'. At the end of her third year before graduating from Dongnae Girls' High School, she was said that Dr.U Jang-chun, famous for his "seedless watermelon", was employed at an agricultural research institute in Dongnae Spa. At that time, she decided to go to university to see college students who visited to the institute, and she entered the National Fisheries University of Busan with the recommendation of Professor Lee Joo-hong, who was her old teacher of the high school.
She is still living a beautiful life now, what if she had studied horticulture deeply, she would have bloomed with a flower with a different beauty than now. It is not entirely proper to determine which is right. But she still misses the road that she has not tried to go. Asking her to say something to the school juniors, she said, "It is important to look for a lifelong field of study in university life. If I am really pleased and happy, would not it be okay even my major field of study is not popular now? "<Pukyong Today> |
