The public attention to a 'robot that self-extinguishes fire', invented by university student team
This invention of the Pukyong National University's team, 'Hot Shot' (Kim Myeong-jin, Representative student ‧ Park Young-hwan, Advisory professor) won the grand prize at the 'Busan Capstone Design Contest of LINC+ League 2020' held on 29th, January. This work, which combined functions such as deep learning, stereo vision, and automatic driving, enabled fire detection and suppression at the same time, received the best evaluation in this competition, in which 15 universities in Busan participated. The 'autonomous extinguisher robot', which has a spray nozzle, camera, LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) sensor, and wheels in a box of about 40cm in width and height, has learned about 20,000 fire-related pictures through deep learning techniques. Therefore, when a fire occurs, it recognizes the fire with 99% accuracy within 1 second. When a robot driving indoors recognizes a fire, it uses two lenses and stereo vision technology to measure the exact distance between the robot and the fire. Then, the Arduino program, which received the measured distance, is designed to extinguish the fire by spraying the water stored in the robot to the fire point. In an experiment conducted by Pukyong National University students themselves, they set up a random fire for the experiment. It then showed that it only took an average of two seconds for the robot to detect a fire and extinguish it by spraying water. Pukyong National University students designed this robot to be able to attach and detach various sensors such as a fire alarm device so that it can be used in various fields, and they also applied for a patent for an autonomous fire-fighting system applied to the robot. Pukyong National University's LINC Plus (LINC+) Business Team (Seo Yong-cheol, leader) said, "The grand prize of this contest is an excellent example of applying the knowledge and skills of university students to prevent social disasters in preparation for the era of the 4th industrial revolution," and he added, "This is expected to be useful in effectively extinguishing the initial fire by replacing an alarm device without a fire suppression function or a sprinkler that takes time to detect a fire." <Pukyong Today> |
