세계평화 수호를 위한 봉사단체인 부경대 UN서포터즈 학생들은 이날 UN기념공원을 찾은 7개국 55명의 참전용사들과 전사자 유족들을 위한 봉사활동을 펼쳤다. 세계유일의 UN기념공원은 6‧25전쟁에 참전한 11개국 2천300여명의 용사가 잠들어 있는 곳. 이날 UN기념공원에서는 국가보훈처 주관으로 제1차 세계대전 종전 기념일이자 영연방국가의 현충일(Memorial DAy) 및 미국 제대군인의 날(Veterans Day)인 11월 11일을 기념해 ‘부산을 향하여(Turn Toward Busan)’ 추모식이 열렸다. UN서포터즈 학생들은 이날 오전 비가 내리는 날씨 속에서도 참전용사들이 도착하기 1시간 전부터 손님맞이를 준비했다. 이들은 참전용사 환영행사를 비롯해 추모식 행사가 끝날 때까지 참전용사들과 전사자 유족들의 곁을 지키며 통역과 행사장 안내, 헌화 안내, 묘비 안내 등을 지원했다. UN서포터즈 유경묵 학생(영문학과 3학년)은 “지금 우리가 평화롭게 살 수 있도록 목숨을 바쳐 싸운 분들에게 직접 감사의 마음을 전할 수 있어 뿌듯했다.”면서, “앞으로도 평화를 위한 봉사활동을 열심히 펼치고 싶다.”고 말했다. 한편, 대학교육역량강화사업 프로그램으로 지난 2009년 출범한 ‘부경 UN서포터즈’는 국방부와 연계한 민간인 최초 유해 발굴 사업에 참여하고 한국전쟁 참전국 터키를 찾아 참전용사들에게 감사의 뜻을 전하는 등 다양한 활동을 펼쳐왔으며, 현재 4기가 활동 중이다.<부경투데이> At 9:30am on the 11th of November, at the entrance of the UN memorial cemetery in Nam-gu Busan, veterans in their eighties from far away were touched when they saw the UN supporter's greeting. The volunteer team for ‘Peace for the World’ did a volunteer job for 55 veterans and their families from 7 different countries. The UN memorial cemetery is the only cemetery for around 2300 soldiers from 11 countries who sacrificed their life for the Korean War. The Patriots and Veterans Administration Agency conducted this memorial service 'Toward Busan' on 11th of November as a day to commemorate the end of World War 1, the memorial day of Commonwealth countries, and the American veterans day. The UN supporters students prepared to greet them 1 hour before the veterans arrived even though it was raining in the morning. They translated and guided the veterans, walking alongside them till the end of the service. "I could feel warmth inside of my mind when I convey appreciation for their sacrifice that has enabled us to live in peace now. I will do my best for this volunteer job and for peace in this world," Kyoung-muk You who is a third-grade student of the English Language and Literature Department said. ‘Pukyoung UN supporters’, which was established in 2009 as a program of business for improving university education capability, has conducted various activities such as participating in the recovery operation for the Korean war dead bodies as a first civilian team, and conveying an appreciation message to Turkey veterans by visiting them.
