부경대학교 동문인 김재철 동원그룹 회장(84)의 ‘은퇴 소식’이 4월 17일 전국 언론마다 톱 뉴스였다.

김 회장은 부경대 전신 부산수산대 어로학과를 1958년 졸업했다. 현재 부경대학교 명예총장.

이날 언론들은 ‘아름다운 은퇴’, ‘배 한 척으로 참치 신화 김재철 회장 물러난다’ ‘참치왕’ ‘보기 드문 용퇴’ 등의 표현을 동원해가며 김 회장의 은퇴 선언에 각별한 의미를 부여했다. 

부경대학교의 자랑스러운 동문인 그에게 그동안 어떤 일들이 지나갔던 걸까?

김 회장은 지난 16일 경기 이천 연수원에서 열린 동원산업 창립 50주년 기념식에서 “이제 무거운 짐을 내려놓겠습니다.”라며 은퇴를 선언했다. 1969년 서울 명동의 한 작은 사무실에서 자본금 1000만원, 직원 3명, 원양어선 1척으로 동원산업을 창업하고 회사를 이끌어온 지 50년 만이다.

한국경제신문은 “(그는) 수산대(현 부경대)에 입학했다. … 대학을 졸업한 청년 김재철은 선장이 됐다.”고 소개했다. 이어 “그는 다른 뱃사람들과 달랐다. 배에서도 책을 끼고 살았다. 고기 잡는 법을 연구하고 메모했다. 참치를 잘 잡은 그는 ‘캡틴 JC KIM’으로 불렸다.”고 덧붙였다.

이날 파이낸셜뉴스는 ‘동원 키워낸 참치왕 … 50주년 날 아름다운 은퇴를 택하다’라는 기사에서 “대한민국 원양산업의 산증인 ‘캡틴 킴’ 동원그룹 김재철 회장이 후배들에게 바다를 맡기고 일선에서 물러났다.”면서, “김 회장은 수산대 출신으로 26세 젊은 나이에 원양어선 선장이 돼 대한민국 원양업 신화를 쓴 국보급 일꾼이다.”고 소개했다.

조선일보는 ‘참치 바다서 금융의 바다까지 … 50년 눈부신 항해’라는 기사에서 “선원에서 시작해 기업인으로 50년을 살아온 김 회장은 우리 산업의 불모지를 개척해왔다. 1960년대 일본이 주도하던 원양어업에 뛰어들어 한국을 한 때 3대 원양어업 강국으로 만들었다.”라고 밝혔다.

김 회장이 만든 ‘동원 참치캔’은 한국 최초의 참치캔이다.

“4차 산업혁명과 인공지능(AI) 시대에는 정보의 스피드가 중요하다. 스피드 사회에선 젊은 사람들이 동원을 끌고 가면 더 잘할 것.”

조선일보가 기사로 전해준, 요즘 청춘들에게 주는 김 회장의 메시지도 특별하다.
