'What I have to do, what I want to do, what I do well!' The 63rd lecture of <the Concert for Pukyong CEO Happiness Humanities> held at the Pukyong National University Mirae Bldg at 7 am on 11, April and the first lecturer of 2019 lectures were professor Kim Sang-geun (United Graduate School of Theology, Yonsei University) of Yonsei University.
. Taking out the first topic, 'What is happiness', Professor Kim introduced the blacksmith 'Vulcan' in the Greek myth. Professor Kim said, "Vulcan was a workaholic. He thought that he would be happy if he worked hard day and night. But while he is heading toward such success, his wife Venus falls into an affair with Mars, the god of war. " "Do you think that if you work hard and succeed, you can be happy? You are just looking forward and running straight, aren't you?" and he suggested that you stop for a while and look back on what 'happiness' is. Professor Kim said, "I want you to lay down the oars for a while that you are eagerly pulling in your voyage now." and, "You should look up at the star of the night sky and check your position and the direction of your life.” Professor Kim introduced a passage from the first history book 「History」 written by Greek historian Herodotus. It is the answer of the Greek sage Solon to the question of Croesus, king of Lydia (BC 560-547), 'Have you ever seen the happiest man in the world?' 'If somebody ends up happily, that person is the person you are looking for, Professor Kim recently mentioned the case of a stock rich who killed a parent shocked society. "The happiness of this moment is mostly temporary. We must realize that the last moment of life is happiness and true happiness.", said professor Kim. For this, professor Kim emphasized that we should constantly reflect on his second topic, 'Who am I?'. He introduced the contents of Homer's work "Odyssey". Odysseus, one of the best political-thinker in Greece, who led a 10-year Trojan War, returns home after overcoming all kinds of hardships on his 10year long journey. Whenever he he went through trouble, Odysseus said, 'I have already experienced many things in the field and on the battlefield and have a rough time of it. I do not care if these troubles have been added to these hardships.' Professor Kim said, "We all are Odysseus. We are born with the fate of suffering like Odysseus." and he asked back, "so how can we just live without loving the fate that has been given to us?" Love your fate, this is what we call 'Amor fati'. Enduring life, the words of Odysseus follow. 'Forbear with it, my heart. Did not you tolerate the rougher than this before when the Cychreus had eaten my war brothers! You, who were already ready to die, endure until you were brought out the tricks out of the cave!' Odysseus says to endure the temptation of a fairy Siren on his way home. If someone listen to the song of this fairy, the person will not be able to take charge of him or herself and die. 'You bind me with a painful rope so that I will not be stuck on the spot, standing upright in the barrel that holds the mast, and knot the tip of the rope on the mast. And when I beg or command to be released from you, then you shall bind me with more ropes.' Professor Kim said, "When you work very hard, you become well experienced, and your position or power level-up, you will be tempted by temptation. Like Odysseus, who tied his body to the mast to resist the temptation of the siren, we must tie ourselves and our spirit firmly." The words that Odysseus told his wife, Penelope, that he finally arrived at missing home. 'Honey! We have not yet reached the end of all hardships. There will be tremendous hardships in the future, and no matter how many and difficult it is, I must carry out it all.' It is life that you have to advance toward a new goal after achieving one goal. In Odysseus' painting (1882) of Gustav Schwab, who defeats 108 suitors, there is a son Odysseus who watches every move of his father through the door. Professor Kim said, "You have seen how your father lives. Your children are also looking at your life. Even if your children are not seeing you, they look at you and become like your life." Professor Kim suggested us to reflect on whether our life is a life that is not shameful for the children. Then how we should live respectable life? The third topic of this lecture was Michelangelo (1475-1564) and Steve Jobs (1955-2011). "Michelangelo, the best artist in the Renaissance era, had a poor family and early lost his mother, growing up in a quarry house, but he has sublimated the trauma into an exquisite work of art." he said. What Apple CEO Steve Jobs left is a story of life going on in recognition of the finitude of life. 'Knowing that I will die soon Professor Kim said, "We are all going to die. What I have to do, what I want to do, what I do well together is the way to a happy life without being ashamed." - If you have ever lived by someone else's orders, stop now. |
